A Giant Passes

William Buckley has died.

As I was looking at the many laudatory comments at National Review Online for this giant intellect and conservative hero, I wondered what the reaction at Huffington Post might be to this news? William F. Buckley Dead At 82 - Politics on The Huffington Post

I think the fact that comments were closed on this announcement says everything. Those who run this site know their audience well enough to avoid the embarrassment that would be certain if they allowed their kind readers unfettered liberty to comment.

Didn't have to go too far to start finding examples of what I'm talking about:

"tinkaboutit
Oh BTW we're all glad William F Buckley is dead. Let's all take a moment of silence and pray that his soul is exactly where it belongs. "

Such class. Makes you want to put them all in a big shiny bus and drive it off a pier.

West Nile virus devastating birds in suburbia, study finds | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

The death toll for crows and jays is easily in the hundreds of thousands, based on the number dead bodies found and extrapolated for what wasn't reported ...

When life is out of balance, a new balance will be found, though not necessarily one advantageous to humans.

The birds act as an early warning system for humans, said Wesley Hochachka, assistant director of bird population studies at Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

"If you start seeing crows dying and dying in numbers, that means there could be a human outbreak," said Hochachka, who was not involved with the study.

The Fool on the Hill

Bush says wants action on gasoline plan by end 2008 | Reuters

In his State of the Union speech in January, Bush floated a proposal to raise U.S. biofuels production five times current levels by 2017 and raise automobile fuel economy standards by 4 percent a year through 2017.

He doesn't have a clue, or he actually does, and is lying. Biofuel is another non-scalable dead end. Biofuel on the scale that he is talking about would use all the arable land in the U.S., meaning we would have to import all our food from outside the U.S.

So, foreign fuel, or foreign food? Recent events have shown what foreign food can do for us.

Current Chaos Manor mail

Harry Erwin's Letter from England: "Over the last five years in the UK, recruitment of students into computing, engineering, and technology programs has crashed to about 20% of what it was in 2000. This has affected the teaching universities in particular, as they serve as insurance schools for many students. The main problem is not students responding to a perceived downturn in the job market, but rather appears to be uninteresting (to students) course content. The university is considering elimination of our programs in these three areas (math and statistics were similarly eliminated about ten years ago) as not economically viable, but the school has been given a reprieve to see if we can turn things around in the next year."

And so the West's long slow march into darkness passes another milestone.

Power to Choose?

ADAMANT: The Green's Black Secret

Texas has deregulated the electric market, so consumers can pick one of several power companies to provide their electricity.

TXU, having been caught manipulating the power grid ala Enron, is now trying to sell itself to a holding company, and is running a disgusting PR campaign hyping the "New TXU" promising "reliable, affordable electricity for everyone" with a background image of windmills!

Wind is neither reliable or affordable, but it makes the greenies go all dewy eyed when you show windmills spinning away. The ones in the TXU commercials are spinning fast enough that the blades are blurred, indicating that they are in runaway condition, and probably near the mechanical self-destruction point.

At the power-to-choose site, power companies are graded on their generation methods, i.e., how much coal, how much natural gas, how much nuclear, how much "renewable" etc.

I am looking for one that is all coal and nuclear, no natural gas, no "renewable energy". I want the one that makes sense, not sound bites.

If the greenies are so upset by CO2 emissions, I suggest they hold their breath until they drop dead.

Later Of course it's not possible. Other than the moon beam and fairy dust plants that sell 100% wind power, there are only a very few actual power producers in Texas, and a look at the generation mix reveals that every one has around 50% natural gas in the mix.

Those TXU commercials are still disgusting.

This Sums It Up for Me

Current View

I intend to vote this election, and although I do not believe the Republicans deserve to win -- they have shown they do not govern well, and have grown fat with power -- the prospects of Speaker Pelosi are less attractive. The way to close the Southern Border is not to elect the Open Borders Party. The way to reform foreign policy is not precipitate retreat and dismantling of Strategic Defense. The way to energy independence is not to put even greater obstacles in front of nuclear power while spending money on moonbeams and fairy wheels. The way to better emergency management through building local civil defense organizations is not to elect the party that invented FEMA and destroyed Civil Defense.

The Republicans have shown they are not fit to rule. Alas, the Democrats have no better prospects. The Democrats didn't get us into a ground war, but they did get us into war in the Balkans where we have far less national interest than we do in Iraq. The Republicans took us into Afghanistan and then Iraq. The Democrats would not have taken us into Afghanistan, and would have imposed even heavier restrictions on domestic energy production.

How to Hack an Election

Center for Information Technology Policy » Voting Study

The synopsis:

This paper presents a fully independent security study of a Diebold AccuVote-TS voting machine, including its hardware and software. We obtained the machine from a private party. Analysis of the machine, in light of real election procedures, shows that it is vulnerable to extremely serious attacks. For example, an attacker who gets physical access to a machine or its removable memory card for as little as one minute could install malicious code; malicious code on a machine could steal votes undetectably, modifying all records, logs, and counters to be consistent with the fraudulent vote count it creates. An attacker could also create malicious code that spreads automatically and silently from machine to machine during normal election activities — a voting-machine virus. We have constructed working demonstrations of these attacks in our lab. Mitigating these threats will require changes to the voting machine's hardware and software and the adoption of more rigorous election procedures.

" ... a voting machine virus." Given the money available to compromise individuals with physical access to voting machines, not to mention the True Believers who believe the ends justify the means, a compromised election result is an inevitablity. Since 2000 and 2004 have shown that national results can turn on a few key precincts, the outcome of elections using this equipment are to be questioned from this point on.

Global Whoring

The Volokh Conspiracy - -

I watched ABC News' special report on seven ways the world could end last night. The first six were entertaining. The gamma burst scenario was spooky; the idea that the closest object that could do this is 8000 light years away, and that's more than close enough to end all life on earth was startling. Less convincing was the rogue black hole eating the solar system, although the description of being sucked into a black hole given by their astro physicist while he all but drooled in anticipation was, shall we say, different.

Then came supervolcano eruption, asteroid strike, nuclear holocaust, pandemic disease and biowar, and finally, number one on the list of top ways to end the world:

Global Warming.

They started this segment with impeccable scientific evidence of human caused warming: a trucker who said he is seeing armadillos (ARMADILLOS?!!??!?) in places he's never seen them before (where? in truck stop men's rooms?), and a lady who is disturbed that her Japanese anemones aren't blooming at the right time any more (maybe you over/under fertilized them, dearie? maybe a tree has changed the light exposure they get? maybe you're off your meds and think Truman is still president?). Continuing this scintillating display of pure science, they had exactly two scientists(?) on before they turned the show over to the biggest GW huckster on the freaking planet, Al (it's getting warm in here) Gore, who said outright that any scientist who was sceptical about human origins of climate change had been paid off by fossil fuel interests to lie. It went down hill from there.

So an interesting hour and forty-five minutes was just a run-up to a purely propagandistic segment of corporation bashing and enviro-whoring, starring the biggest enviro-whore of all.

I turned it off, regretting missing the reruns on NBC.

But hardly anyone disagrees that global warming is occurring.

The Americanization of Israel

Our World: The Olmert government must go | Jerusalem Post

Israel went up against a determined enemy dedicated to their destruction, with nothing less than their continued survival at stake, and they backed down.

If the people of Israel do not take steps immediately to remove the incompetent Olmert government and put in place one that understands what's at stake and how to deal with it, their existence as a nation is in serious doubt.

Israel has lost their first war. A nation that must never lose any of their wars has lost this one. Hizballah will be rearmed and back in south Lebanon before the new year, probably with better, longer range missiles with bigger payloads.

When Hizballah has missiles that can reach Tel Aviv, that can be accurately targeted, what are you going to do? Condi Rice won't be able to save you from what's coming.

Israel has become like America, and lost the will to do what is necessary to survive. America can postpone the final day because of the oceans that separate us from our enemies. Israel's enemies share borders with her.

We should start planning on how to deal with a middle east that has no Israel in it, and how we will respond to a Muslim-led holocaust.

I hope that as Israel goes down, they use their nuclear weapons against all the Arab capitals that have warred against them all these years.

And So It Goes

From Jerry Pournelle: Current View

We are all in this together, including the 40% of the minority population in England that says it is all right to carry out suicide bombing operations against Jews. We need to digest that information. But Liberalism is a philosophy of consolation for Western Civilization as it commits suicide; it was Liberalism that invited all those of alien cultures to live in every western nation, and said that it is OK for Muslim countries to have laws excluding Jews and Christians, but we cannot exclude anyone for any reason, even if they are here illegally. Interesting. But isn't that fair? Don't we feel better about ourselves for having been so fair and open? It's the land of the free and we will welcome those who want to end that.

I hope it is consolation for all those who are trying to go about their business and standing in 9 hour lines to get on airplanes without a water bottle or a book or a magazine. We should all feel good about how generous we are. The consolation is about all we will get for doing all this.

But we have diversity, and that's really neat, and we all ought to be proud.

Lethal injection worries stir US death penalty debate | In Depth | Reuters.com

From the article:

A late reprieve spared Michael Taylor, who pleaded guilty to the 1989 rape and murder of a Kansas City school girl, and he remains alive on the state's death row.

and this:

... all executions in Missouri are now blocked because of evidence that state executioners might be inadvertently causing inmates to feel undue pain when they are killed.

Oh, we wouldn't want these monsters to feel undue pain, would we?

And Taylor is looking good to die of old age before the death penalty can be carried out. He robbed a family of their daughter in a brutal fashion 17 years ago, but we don't want him to feel undue pain.

And Mrs. Taylor? You raised a monster. You should be ready and willing to put him down yourself to rid the world of this creature and partially repay the debt you owe for bringing him into the world.

It is important to note the isolation of the paleoclimate community; even though they rely heavily on statistical methods they do not seem to be interacting with the statistical community. Additionally, we judge that the sharing of research materials, data and results was haphazardly and grudgingly done. In this case we judge that there was too much reliance on peer review, which was not necessarily independent. Moreover, the work has been sufficiently politicized that this community can hardly reassess their public positions without losing credibility. Overall, our committee believes that Dr. Mann’s assessments that the decade of the 1990s was the hottest decade of the millennium and that 1998 was the hottest year of the millennium cannot be supported by his analysis.

"... cannot be supported by his analysis." Think about that while watching the big "global warming" show on the Discovery Channel tonight. Tom Brokaw has drunk the kool-aide, and I expect this show to be a search for every piece of evidence that supports the theory of anthropogenic climate warming while ignoring the considerable body of evidence that argues against.

(Later) ... And so it was. The main speaker was James Hansen, the guy who was in all the news saying the Bush administration was stifling his message. There was lots of "most scientists say..." and "warming could cause" and "this may bring about", but nobody willing to step up and say "if you people don't stop this we're all going to die".

Lots of anecdotes of bad forest fires and how last year they were the worst anybodys ever seen, by gum! And many, many shots of calving icebergs, something that is a result of normal glacial activity, not melting. Melting causes the bergs never to reach the sea, but the calving shots are much more dramatic, and the audience isn't smart enough to know the difference anyway.

And Hansen left us with a chilling cliffhanger: there have been five or six mass extinction events in earth's history and they were caused by climate change!

Well, no, several were caused by the climate change that followed asteroid or comet strikes, a different thing altogether. But it was very important that everyone watching come away with the message that EVERY SCIENTIST ON THE PLANET AGREES THAT THIS IS WHAT IS HAPPENING AND IT"S BAD but that is nonsense, they can't get that much agreement at their own kool-aide drinking conventions, much less all the others in the field.

But lots of grant money is riding on the message getting out, so expect more of these scary "documentaries".

Treason by Any Name

If the treasonous character of the New York Times is not patently evident by now, I give you this: The New York Times > New York Region > Slide Show > Slide Show: Memorable Photographs

Thanks and hat tip to Protein Wisdom.

When did war journalism start including imbedding reporters with enemy forces? This guy is firing at U.S. forces while the NYT photographer, Joao Silva, stands by and takes his picture. My take is that if this treasonous asshole gets taken out by a 105 round through that window in a fire suppression op, GOOD!

After all, he's just a mercenary. Screw him.

Gee, Alaska, You Must Be Proud

... to have sent your village idiot to the Senate.

That would be Ted Stevens, official jackass:

I just the other day got, an internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. Why?

Why? Because you are a clueless, ignorant, stupid moron who didn't check his email, I mean his internet until yesterday.

These are the bufoons who run the country.

Alaska, we thank you.

Re: Barbara Radnofsky

I was going to vote for Radnofsky for senate in Texas, as I am fairly disgusted by Kay Hutchison, but she has gone on record on her positions on issues and now I find that I cannot.

She is opposed to any meaningful control of U.S. borders, favoring the "let'em all in and make'em legal" approach of the odious McCain.

She wants a firm withdrawal timetable from Iraq, a position that guarantees the suicide of the west if carried out. I also favor a firm timetable: bring the troops home when they have killed the last bad guy.

These issues alone are enough to make me vote for Hutchison in November, as distasteful as that is, because I will not vote for or support anyone who so happily embraces the death of her civilization.

It's Just a Movie

BREITBART.COM - Ron Howard Answers 'Da Vinci' Critics

"There's no question that the film is likely to be upsetting to some people," Howard told reporters. "My advice, since virtually no one has really seen the movie yet, is to not go see the movie if you think you're going to be upset. Wait. Talk to somebody who has seen it. Discuss it. And then arrive at an opinion about the movie itself."

"Again: This is supposed to be entertainment, it's not theology," he said.

Now I'd like to see a movie adaptation of "The Satanic Verses".

I Have a Solution

Wired News: Under Attack, Spam Fighter Folds

Blue Security, creators of Blue Frog anti-spam software, has closed down rather than risk further disruptions to the internet by a vicious spammer.

I remember reading about a big spammer in Russia who was brutally beaten to death a few months back.

Any chance we could get the same thing done to PharmaMaster? I figure the hundreds of bloggers whose sites were taken down by this maggot would really appreciate having him put out of commission permanently.

More Signs of the Coming Crisis

FCC approves Net-wiretapping taxes | CNET News.com

"The first obligation is...the safety of the people," said FCC Commissioner Michael Copps, a Democrat. "This commission supports efforts to protect the public safety and homeland security of the United States and its people."

Wrong.

The first obligation is to protect freedom. Any tinhorn dictator can provide public safety and homeland security. That this pissant doesn't get that is a bad sign.

Typical, but still bad.

More ROP* Fun

Muslims Muzzling Memphis

This is Memphis, Tennessee, once home to Elvis Presley.

Do you honestly think the scheduled lecture will serve any useful purpose other than inflaming the Muslims, insulting them and spilling poison in the community?

No threat there, is there?

The not-so hidden subtext here is, "We're Muslims. We love peace, but if you offend us in any way we will probably go bug-fuck crazy, and kill somebody. Maybe lots of somebodies. And burn some shit. And it will be your fault, because, you know, you offended us."

Well, here's a clue: get the fuck over it. This is a free society. People are going to do or say offensive things. I am offended by the way other people drive at least three or four times a day, just driving to work, but I don't go burn their houses and behead their children. Being that hypersensitive is not a cultural icon, it's a sign of a seriously infantalized mindset. What you are saying is, you as Muslims lack the cultural maturity to participate in modern civilization (big surprise, that).

We are nurturing a viper in our midst.
